Please note: This event will take place on Tuesday, 27 October.
14:30 – 16:00
Propsteikirche St. Trinitatis
Nonnenmühlgasse 2
04107 Leipzig

Matěj Strnad (Czech National Film Archive)
Adelheid Heftberger (Bundesarchiv AV)

AI is shaping our world and influences how filmmakers find and use archival footage. But archives hold real-life stories, not just data. Why is every AI decision, from archive to edit suite, an ethical one? AI expert Peter Hora introduces AIrchive, an open-source tool in development that searches by meaning, not metadata. Ethicist Jan Motal (Masaryk University) offers documentary makers an ethical compass rooted in dialogue.

Talk: Is There a Red Line? – AI in Documentary Filmmaking

Wednesday, 28 October 2026
10:00 – 11:00
Moderator:
Elizabeth Klinck (Founder of E Klinck Research, Archive Producer)

Panellists:
Mona El-Bira (Archive Producer / GRAP)
Rasmus Raecke (ZDF Commissioning Editor NANO)
Katharina Bergfeld (Producer / Blue Magpie Film)

When is an archive image still documentary and will the next generation still care whether it’s real? Broadcasters are already replacing reenactments with AI-animated scenes. Soon it won’t be the reenactment that’s generated, but the archive shot itself. GRAP (German Researchers and Archive Producers) brings the latest from Footage Fest New York and the US, where the Archive Producers Association has issued first guidelines. A commissioning editor from a broadcaster’s science department shares how AI is already used. Producers report from a demanding world of shrinking budgets, where every shortcut is tempting. And we screen and discuss the evidence: clips where AI met archive material.

Keynote: Clear the Music – Licensing Basics for Docs

Wednesday, 28 October 2026
14:00 – 14:20
Speaker: Solveig Hansen (Archive Producer)

Using music in film can quickly become a legal maze. Who actually owns a song and which rights do filmmakers need? This talk provides a practical introduction to publishing, master and synchronization rights and explains what happens when licences expire. It also takes a closer look at supposedly “royalty-free” music and some of the most common misconceptions surrounding music licensing. Finally, we’ll take a brief look at current developments around AI-generated music and what they could mean for filmmakers.

DOK Talk: Kino und Kampf – The Talk on the Retrospective

Wednesday, 28 October 2026
15:00 – 16:30

Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (Arsenal Filminstitut)
Petra Rauschenbach (German Federal Archives)
Stefanie Eckert (DEFA Foundation)
Florian Wüst (Curator)

A large number of analogue prints of the films of the revolutionary Latin American cinema of the 1960s/70s can be found in the Arsenal archive and the Federal Archives. The paths they took to get there also give an account of collaborations between East and West German film festivals, distributors and archives despite the Iron Curtain. A discussion about this history and the significance of institutional collaboration today.

Industry Connections: Consultations with GRAP members

11.30-12.30 and 15.30-16.30. Participants in DOK Industry are warmly invited to consult with GRAP’s archive producers regarding the research and licensing of film material for their projects. Registration is via the DOK Leipzig website.
