Exciting panels at the DOK Archive Market 202

How Did They Do It? Researching and Producing “Stasi FC”

10am – 11am

Guests: Erik Winker (producer)
Stephen Maier (archive producer)
Vanessa Christoffers-Trinks (archive producer)
Moderation: Elizabeth Klinck

This panel dives deep into the documentary film ‘Stasi FC’ (2023, 87 min). The meticulously researched film won the FOCAL Award 2024 for ‘Best Use of Footage in a History Feature ’ (Interview). It shows rare footage that reveals how the Stasi – the secret service of the GDR – interfered in the football industry in East Germany.

Archive producers Stephen Maier and Vanessa Christoffers-Trinks and producer Erik Winker provide detailed insights into their working process. They shed light on the research of archive material and working with the film material as well as budget planning and the licensing process from different perspectives.

‘Stasi FC’ will be shown for accredited guests and Archive Market Pass holders as part of the Market Screenings on Wednesday 30 October.

Archive Producers: What’s Next? Discussing the Trends and Developments from the Inside

2:30pm – 3pm

Talk with Elizabeth Klinck (archive producer from Canada) and Monika Preischl (archive producer from Germany)

The two archive producers review the developments in the industry over the past year and take a look into the future to see what it holds for archive producing. Two years have passed since GRAP e.V. was founded, time for a look back, forward and around the globe. In the USA, the Archival Producers Alliance has published a guide to working with artificial intelligence in archive production. Professionals are having to come to terms with the increasingly widespread and growing use of AI in various areas of work. Some of the applications seem sensible, others put archival work ethics to the test. Is it possible or desirable to set a global standard?

Archives of Colonialism and Socialism. The GDR, Namibia and the Film Heritage of Today

Note: this event will already take place on 30 October 2024 from 2pm – 3:30pm.

Guests: Dr Andrea Hänger (cice-president of the German Federal Archives)
John Green (cinematographer)
Sarah Negumbo, via video link (director of the Namibia Library and Archives Service)
Naomi Beukes (filmmaker)
Moderation: Laura Horelli

Based on the documentary film ‘Namibia – The Forgotten Colony’ (1975/76, 62 min), this panel will explore the aesthetics and archival politics of (neo-)colonialism.

The discussion with international participants from German and Namibian archives, members of the original film crew of the GDR-produced TV documentary and representatives of the contemporary Namibian film industry will present a broad spectrum of perspectives. Critical questions will be raised about how the struggle for independence was portrayed from the outside, who owned the struggle portrayed and how the political climate of the GDR shaped the narrative. Today, German archives are faced with the question of how they should deal with the colonial legacy stored on their shelves on 8, 16 and 35 mm film. Are they the ones who should be deciding?

‘Namibia – The Forgotten Colony’ will be shown for accredited guests and Archive Market Pass holders as part of the Market Screenings on Wednesday 30 October.
